Guler Ates

Nasceu em 1977, na Turquia. Vive e trabalha na Turquia.

O trabalho da Guler Ates comenta a noção ocidental de Orientalismo e os efeitos da polinização cruzada de culturas sobre a identidade feminina e arquitetura. Interessa à artista questionar a relação entre o véu e o Ocidente, através da criação da figura velada fêmea dentro de um interior exuberante europeu ou histórico.

Os locais onde produz são históricos e possuem conexões específicas com o colonialismo – agora pós-colonialismo – e do “Oriente”, nos quais considera interessantes para trabalhar por essas propriedades. Realiza pesquisas sobre a história destes locais, para apresentar a origem do tecido usado como um costume ou véu pelo performer. Como parte da performance, o sujeito conta uma história originada da história do local, explorando o sentimento de dualidade cultural.
